Do Indoor Saunas Need Plumbing?

Most traditional electric or wood-fired indoor saunas do not need plumbing - you ladle water onto rocks for steam, and no drain is required for the sauna room itself. Plumbing becomes necessary if you add a steam generator, rinse shower, floor drain by choice, or a cold plunge nearby.
Dry / Traditional Sauna Rooms
A classic Finnish-style sauna is a dry heat room with a heater and rocks. Moisture comes from brief water on the stones (löyly), not from continuous steam plumbing. Proper waterproofing and vapor barriers protect the structure; a floor drain is optional, not mandatory for every design.
When Water Lines Enter the Plan
Steam saunas, infrared units with humidifiers, outdoor showers, and cold plunges all introduce plumbing. Many homeowners pair an indoor sauna with a nearby bathroom shower instead of piping into the sauna room.
